The Ultimate Moving And Storage Guide

Tips For Space-Challenged Living Spaces

by Gail Wheeler

From micro-apartments to studios to tiny homes, small living spaces are definitely in. However, these diminutive living spaces have their pros and cons; while cheaper housing payments and lower utility bills may be a plus, cramped living and less storage area would definitely fall into the "con" category. Luckily, there are some things you can do to maximize a smaller living space; consider these tips:

The Minimalist Lifestyle

Yes, "minimalist living" is now a thing. While some might speculate that this movement emerged purely out of necessity, those who are less cynical believe some Americans are finally coming around to a simpler, more holistic lifestyle. The minimalist way is all about paring down possessions and simplifying life to remain sustainable on a smaller annual income.

Many minimalists lost their jobs in the 2008 economic downturn but have genuinely come around to the benefits of a simpler, less materialistic way of life. Having minimal possessions definitely suits a goal of making the most of a smaller living space; however, if you aren't quite ready to part with your possessions, you can always put them in a self storage facility like Epic Group Inc while trying out the minimalist ethos.

The Illusion of Space

Another excellent way to maximize a small living area is by doing all that you can to create the illusion of a more substantial space. This can be achieved in the following ways:

  • Use light colored paints on walls and ceilings
  • Select an impactful neutral, dark color for a far wall to make it recede in space
  • Use wispy, light-colored curtains and window treatment
  • Organize or clear away any extraneous clutter
  • Opt for light/blonde wood tones for floors and furnishings

Hideaway Storage and Furniture Pieces

Hideaway furniture has been around for some time; just think of the Murphy bed that conveniently folds away into the wall of a studio apartment or other tight living space. There are also fold-away ironing boards and baby changing tables. These days, you can find beds and coffee tables with hideaway drawer-style storage, and there are even drawer-style appliances for your kitchen. Consider a hideaway refrigerator, freezer or warming oven when decorating or remodeling your kitchen space. If a Murphy bed isn't your style, a bed with pull-out drawers for your clothes will save you from needing a bulky, space-stealing bureau.

If your home is space-challenged, don't despair; there are design and décor ideas that can help it to look and feel stylish and open. Use these design tips to help your small home feel more spacious and appealing.
