The Ultimate Moving And Storage Guide

Keeping Items Safe In Storage

by Gail Wheeler

When storing items inside a self storage unit, there are many things that can happen to them if they are not properly placed and cared for. Things like insects, rodents and moisture can all destroy your items if they are not properly wrapped or placed. Here are some tips you can use to help make sure your belongings will be kept in the best condition possible while being stored.

Keeping Out Moisture

When moving your items into storage, look for a self storage unit that is climate controlled if you are worried about humidity or excessive moisture. Storage units without climate control are at risk for humidity problems, and this can cause damage to some of your items if you do not take necessary steps in keeping them safe.

If you have a storage unit where moisture may be a problem, make sure to place tarps on the flooring of the unit before you start placing any items inside. This will help keep moisture contained for quick clean up. Place pallets on top of the tarps so that items that cannot handle wetness can be elevated to minimize the risk. Use plastic storage bins for smaller items so they have no chance to become wet.

Pest Control

If you are worried about pests getting inside of boxes or bins in your storage unit, you can take a few steps to keep them from wanting to crawl inside to begin with. The first step is when you pack your items at home. Make sure everything you are going to store is clean and that any residue or greasy substances are wiped off of materials you are going to pack.

Check each box or bin you are bringing into storage several times to make sure there are no stowaways. Have the packages sealed tightly with packaging tape or a sturdy lid.

Never put food products in your storage unit. Use plastic bins over cardboard as they are not able to be bitten through to make into a home. Use things like peppermint oil on cotton balls or borax granules to sprinkle around your storage unit. Both of these are deterrents that will make insects and mice want to find another area to make their home.

If you notice any type of infestation in your unit, alert the service manager immediately. Sometimes it can be the fault of another person using a storage unit and the infestation spread through small cracks or holes in the walls. The manager will be able to find the source of the problem and will be able to get a professional exterminator, if necessary.
