Organization Tips: Color Coding Your Self Storage Unit

by Gail Wheeler

Are you considering self storage units to house any excess belongings as part of your upcoming move? If so, you should know that keeping this unit organized can play a huge role in your ability to find and retrieve the items you need as you begin to settle into your new home. Thankfully, organizing this storage space can be much easier than you think with the help of a color coding system. Below you will learn more about this organization method and how it can help to keep all of your stored belongings easily accessible.

Assigning Colors

The first step in this organization process is to assign colors to the different categories that can be found inside your storage unit. While some people will choose to categorize these items by the purpose they serve, others will categorize them by where they belong inside their new home. For instance, you can choose to group all seasonal decor together, or you can choose to group together all of the items that will belong in your bedroom.

Once you have chosen your categories, you will need to choose a color to represent each of these categories. As you assign each color, be sure to make note of the assignment on a master decoder list just in case you ever forget what each color stands for.

Labeling Boxes And Furniture

Now that you know exactly what colors you will be using to identify certain items, you will need to attach a self adhesive label or piece of colored paper to each item. When labeling boxes, be sure to attach a label to both the front and side of the box so that it can be seen even when other boxes are stacked on top or in front of it. When labeling furniture and other large items, be sure to attach the label a stationary part of the item so that the label does not become torn in transit.

Mapping Your Unit

With all of your items ready to be easily identified, all that is left to do is to map the location of these items within your storage unit. This should be done by first marking the location of furniture, appliances, and other large items. Think of these items as your landmarks. They will help you to narrow down the exact location of a specific group of items much faster.

Next, fill in the general location of each color grouping. For instance, boxes with a red label may be marked in the rear left corner, while boxes with a yellow label are in the front center position. Once you have completed your map, tape a copy of this map along with your color code on the inside wall of your storage unit. This will allow you easy access to the information you need to quickly locate the items you desire when returning to your storage unit.
