The Ultimate Moving And Storage Guide

Managing A Move When You Can't Move In Right Away

by Gail Wheeler

What do you do when one lease ends early, but the other doesn't begin until a week or even a month later? It's easy to say that you can stay at a hotel for the time being, but what do you do about all of your things? And what do you do with all of your mail? This interim doesn't have to be a complete nightmare; if managed properly, it can even seem like a relaxing retreat.

Rent a Residential Storage Service

Have your items moved from your first home to a residential storage service by your moving company -- and them from that storage service to your destination. This is almost always better than trying to find a random place to store your items. A professional storage service will be able to keep your items safe and secure. You can also extend your storage service should anything come up later on, without having to move your items to another location.

Have Your Mail Held

Since you don't have a place to receive your mail, you can't very well forward it. But you can have it held. The mail service will usually hold your mail for a few weeks -- and you can extend it longer if you need to. Your mail will come all at once to your new place after this time period has ended.

Look for Appropriate Accommodation

It's usually far more affordable to look for a by-the-week or by-the-month rate than a nightly rate when it comes to hotels. It also gives you a certain level of stability: you know that you'll be in the same room for that period of time, rather than being jumped from room to room.

Don't Forget Your Pets

Moving with pets, especially with a gap, can be very difficult. You may want to make some arrangements for your pets in advance. If you're going to be looking for housing for a few days, most veterinarians should offer convenient boarding services. If you're looking for a few weeks, you may instead want to contact your local animal rescue groups. Many of them offer "fostering" situations to keep your pet safe for a certain period of time.

When requesting a quote from your residential moving services regarding your move, make sure that you discuss the fact that you will need them again. You may be able to get a discount, given that you will need to move your items twice in quick succession.
