The Ultimate Moving And Storage Guide

The Importance Of Temperature Control In Piano Storage

by Gail Wheeler

If you sold your house and are now ready to begin building a new one, you may have to temporarily move to a small apartment while you wait for your house to be built. While this is a common situation for many families, it can present problems. One of the problems you may have might be what you should do with the piano you have. If it won't fit in your apartment, you could always rent piano storage.

What is piano storage?

Piano storage is just like any other storage space you can rent, except that is designed specifically for pianos. Most piano storage facilities allow people to rent space by the month, which is nice because you can avoid being tied to a one-year lease.

If you decide to rent piano storage, you should hire a piano moving company to move your piano directly to the storage unit. You may also want to have the piano movers wrap the entire piano in blankets so that it is protected from dust and dings while it is being stored.

What features should you look for with piano storage?

Unfortunately, a piano will not hold up well if it is stored in a building that does not have air conditioning or heat. Pianos are made of wood and contain a lot of important components. When a piano is exposed to temperature changes, the wood can bow, rot, and warp. The temperature changes can also destroy the keys on the piano and can affect the strings inside the instrument.

Because of this, you should only rent space that is temperature controlled. The space should also be designed specifically for pianos. Some temperature-controlled storage units only heat or cool the spaces slightly. This will not be enough to protect your piano. You should make sure that the space will be thoroughly heated and cooled and kept at a constant temperature for the entire time your piano is being stored there.

Ideally, piano storage should be located inside a building that is kept heated and cooled just like your house would be. This is the best way to protect a piano while it is being stored away from home.

Before you rent piano storage, you may want to visit the facility to see how it is set up, and to see how the temperature is inside the building. Once you find a place you trust, you can hire your piano movers to load it up and place it in the storage facility. Once your house is finished, the same company could then pick it up and deliver it to your new home.
