The Ultimate Moving And Storage Guide

What To Remember When Moving Mirrored Furniture

by Gail Wheeler

When it comes to sophistication and style, few things can deliver quite like mirrored furniture. While it's not exactly a new style of furniture, in recent years its popularity has definitely soared. With all its sparkle, when it comes time to move, this furniture does pose a bit of a challenge. If you own one of these pieces, failure to properly protect and transport it will lead to a disaster. Make sure you know what to do to protect your furniture.

Preparation

Protecting mirrored furniture on moving day starts with proper preparation before transport. The first thing you want to do is clean the piece. If there is any abrasive debris on the surface, such as sand, when you wrap it, it could press into the glass and cause a scratch.

After cleaning the piece, place packing wrap around it. This is a material similar to saran wrap. Next, cover the piece with a moving blanket and use packing tape to secure it in place. In the event the piece does come in contact with something abrasive, this will keep it protected.

Transport

If you fail to properly transport the mirrored furniture on moving day, your efforts will be worthless. Always move the pieces by hand. Never use a dolly or other equipment to move the furniture. These types of mechanical devices put increased pressure on the fragile joints of the mirrors and increase the likelihood of a crack.

When you place the furniture on the moving truck, never place any hard or abrasive items near it. In the event of a sudden stop or turn, these items could bump into the furniture and cause damage. If possible, place the mirrored piece on the truck near a mattress or some other softer item.

Unpacking

Once you arrive at your destination, don't immediately remove the covering from your mirrored furniture. In fact, it's probably best to make the task of uncovering these types of pieces one of the last things you do while moving in. The reason for this is that during the unpacking process, you will be moving both boxes and furniture all around.

If your mirrored furniture is exposed, it's fairly easy to scratch or chip the glass or even break it while unpacking. Don't unwrap the furniture until you have unpacked everything else and you have placed the piece in the exact location where you plan to keep it.

Although it's possible to move mirrored pieces on your own, don't overlook the assistance of a professional. A professional mover will take the stress off of you and ensure your piece arrives at your new home in great condition.
